FAQ's
Questions & Answers
People:
1. Is this product the human form of The Missing Link? I keep hearing Howard Garrett say that "he eats it, too." Is the Omega 3 Basic the product he refers to?
Yes. We re-branded our The Missing Link Master Nutrient Formulas as Omega 3 Basic Master Nutrient Formula in 2001. The reason for the change is that our customers using The Missing Link for their pets often did not realize that The Missing Link Master Nutrient Formula is for human consumption. Only the brand name changed; the formulation is the same.
2. A friend of mine just gave me a bag of Omega 3 Basic Joint support formula with "glucosamine." The bag was open and not refrigerated. Is it still good?
If the product was open and not refrigerated just for a few days or even a week, and the product was stored in a cool, dry place, the product quality should not change. However, once the product leaves our plant and is opened, we cannot prevent possible microbiological contamination. You should be able to tell immediately if the product (or any product) has gone "organoleptically bad" because it will have a very definite rancid order. Exposure to temperatures higher than room temperature and to oxygen will cause fatty acids to break down, causing rancidity. If the scent is still "fresh," the product is probably suitable for continued use. Glucosamine, as an ingredient by itself, is stable for two years at room temperatures.
3. I want to use the human formula as an additive to a muffin recipe. Does cooking diminish the nutritional value of the supplement?
You can use our supplements for cooking or baking to enhance the taste of your baked goods. Ladies at Designing Health, Inc. sometimes bake with our supplements, too. We know that baking with Omega 3 Basic or The Missing Link formula enhances the taste and quality of "baked breads". We decided to do some testing and we compared the results of the "baked breads" to the original products (unbaked supplements). The testing was performed by an outside laboratory. We found the following:
1. In "baked" breads, essential fatty acids omega 3 (alpha-linolenic acid), and omega 6 (linoleic acid) were stable during baking for 35 minutes at 350E.
2. The percent of essential fatty acids decreased. The reason for this result is logical - ingredients such as flour, salt, water, etc. were added into the original product. This created a smaller proportion of total fat when compared to the original product.
The amount of minerals will not change with baking, because minerals are stable during processing. However, there are many naturally occurring phytochemicals in our products that support the immune system, and overall health. It is well known that fresh cooked foods may lose up to 50% of their nutrients with cooking, and up to 20% in freezing. Prolonged freezing denatures our product (or any product).
To receive the maximum benefits from The Missing Link and Omega 3 Basic, we recommend that you supplement your daily diet with our products in their original forms, in the doses suggested on our package label.
4. What is the difference between the dog and human formulas?
The human product does not include animal based ingredients, such as beef bone meal, beef liver, freeze-dried oyster, and freeze-dried codfish. The human formula also includes several additional ingredients not found in the animal formulations.
5. Are the flaxseeds used in your product "organic"?
No, they are not "organic". There are many reasons why we did not approve the use of "organic" flax in our products. One of the reasons is that there is no supplier of "organic flax" that has the capacity to consistently provide us with the quality and quantity of flaxseed that we need. Special quality requirements have to be met before new suppliers are approved. For certain ingredients, this can be a long process before final approval for use in our products.
Please consider that the quality of our products (and any other products) depends on the quality of the source of each ingredient used, the care taken during processing, and the quality of finished good packaging. Therefore, the raw materials used in our products must be:
1. Free from extraneous material, preservatives, and dangerous chemicals.
2. Have no presence of hazardous heavy metals, cyanogenic glycosides, herbicides or pesticides.
3. Microbiologically safe and free of pathogen bacteria.
About "organic" flaxseed:
The word "organic" is not a fair indicator of quality when it relates specifically to flaxseed. Flaxseed requires a cold climate and, therefore, has very few insects or disease pests. As a result, producers have no need to use any fungicides or pesticides on their flaxseed crop. This means that in today's market, we are misled to believe that "organic" flax is of superior quality. To be labeled as "organic," one of the requirements is that flaxseed must be planted and harvested during a pre-determined period. Unfortunately, when there is an abundance of rain during the year, flaxseed is often harvested before full seed maturity. The result is immature, discolored seeds with a higher moisture content that causes a breakdown of fatty acids, resulting in rancidity. Immature seeds also cause higher microbiological counts, and the growth of molds. These are the reasons that flaxseed, even when labeled "organic" often does not meet all of the requirements that apply to high quality flaxseed as described on the next page.
1. Safety and overall quality of flaxseed is very important. Flaxseed comes from the field, and can be contaminated with pathogen bacteria. Dogs and cats are naturally immune to the pathogen Salmonella. However, they are susceptible to other bacteria, molds, and viruses. The word "organic" sounds good - no pesticides - but what about other bacteria and molds? Molds (fungi) are the causes of many illnesses and allergies in humans and animals. Therefore, flaxseeds should be microbiologically clean.
2. High quality flaxseed is free of foreign material and is separated from undersized, damaged, significantly darker or discolored seeds. Such selective processing results in flaxseed of good stability and 99.9% purity.
3. Low moisture (below 10%) and special processing and packaging that protect the seed from light and oxygen are the major factors contributing to great tasting and long shelf life flaxseed.
All our product formulas contain high quality, specially selected flaxseed grown on Canadian soil. These flaxseeds have great nutritional value and are of superior stability. The Designing Health team ensures the freshest possible delivery of natural nutrients and EFAs in their most natural state with patented cold-processing, proprietary packaging, and exceptional quality control.
6. I am two months pregnant, and I would like to know if it is safe to take the Omega 3 Basic Master Nutrient Formula during pregnancy.
We have many customers who have reported that they used the Master Nutrient Formula during their pregnancies, and have had healthy, happy babies.
If you decide to try the Master Nutrient Formula, we suggest that you start slowly, taking only one tablespoon per day for the first few days and gradually building to your recommended daily dosage. As with any change to your regular diet, especially during pregnancy, we recommend that you consult your physician and/or obstetrician before adding the Master Nutrient Formula to your daily supplementation. Your doctor knows your medical history and can provide you with the best advice regarding the use of our product.
Since the early eighties, numerous studies have been conducted that prove the important role of essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6) in prenatal development. Suggested reading: Zimmerman M, Smart Start: The role of essential fatty acids in fetal development, Nutrition Science News 4:3 (1999).
For more information on the benefits of omega-3 and omega-6, please see: INGREDIENT GLOSSARY - Flaxseed
7. What is the suggested daily intake for essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6?
A group of leading experts on polyunsaturated fats made the following recommendations not as a recommended daily intake, but for adequate intakes of essential fatty acids per day - (based on a 2000-calorie diet).
ADEQUATE INTAKE FOR ADULTS
Fatty Acid grams/day
Linoleic Acid (LA) Omega 6 4.44 gram (4400 mg)
Linolenic Acid (ALA) Omega 3 2.22 gram (2200 mg)
DHA + EPA 0.65 gram (650 mg)
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) at least 0.22 gram (220 mg)
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) at least 0.22 gram (220 mg)
Pregnant and lactating women 0.3 gram (300 mg) of DHA
8. I supplement my diet with three tablespoons Omega 3 Basic Master Nutrient Formula each day. What is my daily intake of essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6)?
When we eat flaxseed, we obtain alpha linolenic acid (ALA). Approximately 20% of the (ALA) we consume is converted in our bodies in two other fatty acids: EPA and DHA. These are the same beneficial compounds found in fish oil.
a) 1 tablespoon (8g) of supplement delivers
1100 mg of omega 3 (ALA)
500 mg of omega 6 (linoleic acid)
1100 mg of ALA is converted into 220 mg of EPA + DHA
b) 3 tablespoons (24g) per day of supplement delivers
3300 mg of omega 3 (ALA)
1500 mg of omega 6 (linoleic acid)
3300 mg of ALA is converted into 660 mg of EPA + DHA
