FAQ's Questions & Answers
Cats

1. Can my old cat benefit from alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3)?

Yes. The essential fatty acids in The Missing Link help to maintain proper kidney function and fluid balance. They regulate response to pain, inflammation, etc. Over the past ten years, we have seen The Missing Link supplements do wonders for cats, dogs, horses and wildlife (tigers, bats, chimpanzees, elephants, etc., in zoos across the USA).

Most cat foods on the market contain arachidonic acid, which is a constituent of animal fats (red meat, foul, etc.) but is not present in any vegetable oils. Arachidonic acid is considered an essential fatty acid for cats because they lack an enzyme (delta-6-desaturase) needed to synthesize this fat in their bodies from omega 6 - linoleic acid. Early studies on essential fatty acids in cat nutrition were done mostly with fish oil.

More recent studies show the importance of alpha linolenic acid (from flaxseed) not only in cat but in dog nutrition as well.

2. I have read that the omega 6 essential fatty acid can cause inflammation and many healthy problems for cats. Is that true?

Omega 6 plays an important role in intercellular health. Unfortunately, only omega 6 is approved by AAFCO as an essential fatty acid for animals. We are hoping that this will change soon because new studies have confirmed that the proper ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 is critical to cat and dog health.

Furthermore, many of the problems seen in animals today have to do with inflammation primarily caused by an excess of omega 6 fatty acids in their diet. When the intake of omega 6 essential fatty acids is too high, inflammation occurs and the body becomes prone to allergies, and low energy levels. Too much omega 6 may even cause the growth of certain cancerous cells. All of this weakens the overall immune system. The typical ratios of omega 6 to omega 3 in regular pet diets were 30-40:1. Only in the last few years has the ratio improved to 20-10:1.

Omega 3 shows wonderful anti-inflammatory properties by itself. When balanced properly with omega 6, it provides great health benefits to both animals and humans. In the last few years, many studies were done. These studies suggest that the body's optimal balance between omega-6 (linoleic) and omega-3 (linolenic) fatty acids is somewhere between 4:1 and 2:1. Our supplements provide 22 times more omega 3 than omega 6, bringing this improper ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 from 10:1 in a regular daily pet diet down to 4:1 of omega 6 to omega 3.

3. How does The Missing Link affect feline acne?

Cats carry many different kinds of bacteria - some are beneficial and some are harmful (including acne-causing bacteria). When the digestive system is weak and energy levels drop, the whole immune system becomes less effective. This creates a favorable environment for harmful bacteria to grow in.

The Missing Link supplements are wonderful dietary supplements that are an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fiber as well as essential fatty acids (they contain the proper ratio of essential fatty acids - EFAs). These essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6), along with the other nutrients in our supplements, help increase energy and strongly support the digestive and immune systems. EFAs are also necessary for the absorption of "fat soluble" vitamins (A, E, D, and K), and for intercellular health. With these features, The Missing Link also helps with detoxification. This results in healthy skin and hair.

4. Why don't you put methionine in The Missing Link Feline?

The Missing Link Feline Formula contains 15mg of methionine in 3g of supplement. The methionine is naturally occurring in ingredients in our product. In order to comply with AAFCO, our label does not contain such information.

Methionine is an essential amino acid that is important for synthesis of cisteine and taurine. Methionine is an amino acid that affects the skin, nails, and hair. It regulates the formation of ammonia-free urine and contributes to liver detoxification and breakdown of fats. Furthermore, diets high in methionine might help to prevent kidney stone formation. Also, the proper ratio of essential fatty acids in The Missing Link helps to maintain proper kidney function and fluid balance.

5. What is the difference between The Missing Link Canine and Feline formulas?

The difference between the canine and feline formulas is the inclusion of ingredients (liver, codfish protein, oyster) that provide natural taurine and increase feline palatability in the formula.

6. Why isn't The Missing Link Feline available in a larger size?

In the past, we produced our Feline Formula in an 8 oz. size. A great number of our customers have only one or two cats and they could not use the 8 oz. size within 90 days. Therefore, we switched to a 6 oz. size.
We usually suggest to customers who have many cats that they buy the l lb. (454 gram) Canine/Feline Vegetarian product. It has the same wonderful nutritional benefits of The Missing Link in a larger, more economical package.

7. Can my cat eat the dog product?

Sure it can. If you decide to start your cats on our canine formula (and they like it) make sure that you follow the serving size for cats. Mix a small amount of this supplement into your cat's favorite meal, and gradually increase to the recommended doses according to their weight. If your cats eat dry food only, you should moisten the food and sprinkle supplement over it.

8. I was advised to buy an auto feeder for my kitten. The feeder holds 6 lb. of food. How much supplement should I add to the dry food and will The Missing Link lose some of its benefits?

In order to help you to make the right decision, please consider the following:

a). The amount of The Missing Link you would need to add depends on the amount of food your cat eats per day.
b). You need to find out how many meals are in the 6 lb. feeder.
c). How many days will the food sit in the feeder?
d). Is your kitty on the dry diet only?

To receive the maximum benefits from The Missing Link, we recommend refrigeration of our product after opening and that it be used within the 90 days (3 months) as stated on our label. Your kitty will have better results if you use fresh supplement each day, rather than leaving it for days in an auto feeder. Therefore, I strongly suggest that you find some other way to supplement your kitty's diet with The Missing Link. I know that this requires extra creativity, but kitty's are like babies - they require special attention. Try to mix 3 teaspoon into 1 teaspoon of yogurt, put in some additional snack, or sprinkle it over your kitty's favorite treat. The kitty should drink fresh water after eating.

Our products have been tested for shelf life under various conditions in our laboratory. Open product remained stable for 5 - 7 days with no refrigeration - stored at normal room temperature under sanitary and controlled conditions. The product was not mixed with other food.

9. What is the pH of cat urine after using The Missing Link?

The pH ranged between 5.6 - 5.8 (slightly acidic). The Missing Link is only 4% of the daily diet. You should focus on the other 96% of diet. Poultry, fish, organ meats, eggs, pasta, etc. are naturally acid forming foods.
