1. Why do you have liver and codfish protein in the bird supplement?
The major source of nutrition for domestic birds is a diet high in carbohydrates. These seed diets often contain higher amounts of saturated fats, and have low nutritional values. This improper nutrition can cause feather picking, biting, and eventually immune system failure.
In the wild, birds ate insects, worms, bugs, etc. for protein. Proteins are important for tissue repair, bones, muscles, skin, feathers, nails and internal organs. Inadequate quantity and quality of protein results in classic signs of protein deficiency (poor muscle development, water retention, a suppressed immune system, and lack of energy). This is one of the main reasons why we formulated The Missing Link Avian formula not only with an animal source of proteins (beef liver, codfish, whey), but also a vegetarian source (soy).
2. Could the amount of sunflower seed in the avian formula potentially cause any problems?
No. Both sunflower and flax seeds used in our pet products (as well as all other vegetarian, and animal-based ingredients) are used in our human products as well. They are high quality and human edible. Also, the amount of sunflower seeds in our product is minor, and the serving size for birds is very small. (Our supplement is only 3 - 4% of the daily diet.)
For molds to grow, the product has to have water activity (Aw) above 0.55. Water activity of our TML supplement (finished product) is between 0.31 to 0.43 (maximum). Therefore, there is no chance for any pathogen bacteria (such as E. coli, Salmonella) or any molds to grow, including Aspergillus flavus.
We have been around for ten years and have never had a case of illness caused by toxins, or pathogens in our products. Our quality control ensures that there are no preservatives, aflatoxins, vomitoxins, heavy metals, cyanides, etc., present in our products. We taste our animal products all the time and we keep in-house samples of each lot produced.
3. Are sunflower seeds toxic to Love Birds, especially when they are young?
It is very common for peanuts and corn meal (these two are the first on the list), sunflower seeds, cottonseed meal cake, and many grains to cause Aflatoxicosis in birds. Aflatoxicosis is the result of food contamination with Aspergillus flavus (a mold), or some other 'bad' Aspergillus species. Aspergillus causes all kinds of health problems for birds. Young birds appear to be more susceptible than adult birds (not only Love Birds). Aspergillus causes lethargy, impaired growth, ruffled feathers, liver problems, and cancers. Aflatoxicosis is the number one cause of death in birds.
Not only birds, but also many humans (especially children) have health problems because of aflatoxins. Example: allergies to peanuts. There is a second condition called Aspergillosis (all species of birds are susceptible). It is caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. Infection usually occurs after inhalation of large numbers of spores from heavily contaminated feed or litter. This overwhelms the resistance of the bird. Aspergillus can penetrate egg shells and infect the embryo. Such eggs may appear green when candied. Infected embryos may hatch with lesions. Aspergillosis causes gasping, accelerated breathing, anorexia, progressive emaciation and increased thirst.
4. How to avoid feed/food/supplement contamination?
a). Use good quality feed/food and supplements.
b). Destroy any feed/food contaminated with mold.
c). Avoid storing feed for long periods of time.
d). Store feed under cool and dry conditions.
Additional Tips:
a). Always make fresh food.
b). Always use clean dishes when serving food or supplements.
c). Always change the water for your bird.
The Missing Link Supplements (unopened) are stable under cool and dry conditions over 24 months.
We recommend refrigeration of our product after opening. In order to receive the maximum benefits from The Missing Link, product should be used within the 90 days (3 months) as stated on our label.
