Stroke Survivor Conquers Boston!

The answer was yes. Against his doctor's advice, Dr. Hardin ran a 10K marathon on July 4, 2001, equipped with a heart monitor. This time, he crossed the finish line as he had so many times before, a runner . . . a little slower maybe, but a runner once more. Now he was even more determined to accomplish a goal he set soon after his stroke, to run in the Disney marathon for the American Stroke Association, which, if fast enough, would qualify him to run in the Boston Marathon before the first anniversary of his stroke.

Training aside, a new facet to his recovery and overall health was also weighing on his mind. "My doctor asked if I took any omega 3 essential fatty acid supplements, particularly emphasizing flaxseed. The truth is, I've always been aware of the benefits of flaxseed, but didn't want to grind my own. The process just seemed too time-consuming. Amazingly enough, a few months later Jim Wagoner from Designing Health came into my clinic and told me about Omega 3 Basic. It must have been fate!"

On April 15, Dr. Hardin crossed the finish line in Boston with a time of four hours and ten minutes. Ever the overachiever, Dr. Hardin was disappointed that he didn't finish in under four hours, his pre-stroke time. We at DHI, however, are amazed and impressed with his incredible accomplishment.

When not running on his treadmill or pounding the pavement to get the 50 to 60 training miles he strives for a week, Dr. Hardin is hard at work at the Metcalf 107 Animal Clinic in Overland Park, Kansas. The rare relaxing moments in his life are spent at home with wife Sue and daughters Lydia and Madeleine.
