Ingredient Glossary
Vegetarian Ingredients
The Missing Link Product Line
Vitamin Ingredients in The Missing Link,
for Companion Animals
(Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
Alfalfa (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Alfalfa is one of nature's most powerful and nutritious plants. The seeds, seed sprouts, and leaves of the plant can be eaten. The Arabs discovered alfalfa and called it the "father of all foods." Alfalfa contains essential amino acids (building blocks of proteins,), and has a proper balance of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and silicon. It includes vitamins K, A (as beta-carotene), E, and B. These elements are needed for proper function of the various organs in the body.
Parts used: We use dehydrated and organically grown leaves (not sprouts) of alfalfa in our products. They are 25% protein and 18% fiber.
Benefits: Alfalfa is one of the richest chlorophyll foods. It builds up immunity to infection in both animals and humans. Alfalfa is able to effectively cleanse the liver and bloodstream of unhealthy cholesterol deposits. Therefore, it is promoted as a detoxifier, and also as an anti-fungal and anti-arthritic.
Apple (Avian Equine and Equine Plus)
General: An apple a day does keep the doctor away. Apples are rich in water-soluble fiber (pectin), and essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A (as beta carotene), folic acid, and vitamin C. They are a good source of naturally occurring calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. They also have the ability to absorb calcium and iron from other foods.
Parts used: Freeze-dried fresh apples, unsulfured.
Benefits: Pectin has the ability to take excess water from the intestines and make a soft bulk that acts as a mild, non-irritating stimulant. This invokes peristaltic movement and improves natural bowel elimination. Pectin fiber also helps to remove unwanted metals and toxins from the body. It has the ability to lower blood cholesterol levels. Phenols found in fresh apples trigger the body's production of natural anti-carcinogens such as glutathione.
Barley Grass (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: This is another "green" food, a class of exceptionally nutritious foods that have high concentrations of calcium and iron. It is a good source of vitamin B12 and vitamin C, and contains all of the essential amino acids, as well as fiber, and protease inhibitors. Barley grass contains naturally occurring flavonoids, chlorophyll, and tocotrienols.
Parts used: The aerial part of young green barley harvested before flowering or seed head emergence. Therefore, our products are gluten-free.
Benefits: Barley grass contributes in many ways to the body's healing ability. This food heals stomach, duodenal, and colon disorders. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. Tocotrienol has an important role in the prevention of atherosclerosis by protecting low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from oxidative stress. It acts as an anti-oxidant and contributes in lowering high blood pressure. This substance reduces cholesterol by interfering with the liver's ability to manufacture cholesterol.
Black-Eyed Peas (Avian only)
General: Black-eyed peas are legumes. They are a good source of soluble and insoluble fiber, and proteins (25%). They are rich in iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, zinc, phosphorous, calcium and potassium. They are a solid source of vitamin B1, vitamin B6, folic acid, niacin, and vitamin C. They also contain protease inhibitors.
Part used: Whole peas that are first cooked then freeze-dried.
Benefits: Lignans and fiber play an important role in protecting against osteoporosis and reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. They have antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-carcinogenic properties. They are vital for maintenance of nerves, intestine, mouth, and skin tissue.
Blackstrap Molasses (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Blackstrap molasses has been included in our formulations because it is a good natural source of minerals such as iron, and calcium. It is also known as the richest natural source of potassium. Refined white sugar (empty calories!), in contrast, does not contain such minerals.
Parts used: Dark part (the good part) of molasses. The amount of sugar in our supplement products per 8 grams of one tablespoon (which is the average serving size) is zero grams.
Benefits: As a blood builder, for trace minerals, and for supporting sustained energy.
Broccoli (Avian only)
General: Broccoli is a member of the cabbage family, and contains many phytonutrients. Thirty-three of them have been identified to date, including: carotenoids, coumarins, flavonoids, glucosinolates, indoles, isothiocyanates, lutein, sulforaphane, terpenes, and phenolic acids. Broccoli is rich in fiber, boron, and vitamins A and C.
Parts used: Dried fresh broccoli heads and stems.
Benefits: Immune system builder. Plays an important role in regulating cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease. Its antioxidant properties actively protect DNA from damage from carcinogens.
Carrot (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Carrot is a well-known "star" for health. Carrots are packed with beta-carotene, the most famous phytonutrient. Carrots contain 42 health benefiting molecules, including carotenoids, coumarins, flavonoids, terpenes, phenolic acids, calcium pectate, etc. Carrots are high in fiber.
Parts used: Freshly harvested carrot roots are dehydrated and milled into the powder.
Benefits: Builds the immune system, is anti-carcinogenic, and prevents heart disease. Powerful antioxidants in carrots help to enhance enzyme activity in the liver, speeding up liver detoxification. Beta-carotene is converted in the body into vitamin A (vital for good vision and skin health). Calcium pectate has cholesterol-reducing properties. It lowers cholesterol by binding bile acids, and preventing them from being reabsorbed into the body.
Cherry (Avian only)
General: Cherries are high in iron. They contain powerful pigments - flavonoids (anthocyanidins, and proanthocyanidins) and vitamin C. These two phytochemicals help cells absorb vitamin C.
Parts used: Dark, sweet cherries, freeze-dried.
Benefits: Cherries have natural healing properties that have been shown to fight and inhibit cancer, by protecting against free radicals. Cherries are used as a detoxifier (for cleansing the liver and kidneys), and are a great blood builder.
Flaxseed (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Flaxseed contains lignans and is nature's richest vegetarian source of the omega 3 essential fatty acid in the form of alpha linolenic acid. It is also an excellent source of the omega 6 essential fatty acid and of soluble and insoluble fiber. Omega oils, "Good Fats," are omega 3 (linolenic acid) and omega 6 (linoleic acid), essential fatty acids that together:
- Form the membrane of the billions of cells in the body
- Regulate response to pain, inflammation, and swelling
- Make up a very large part of the brain's active tissues
- Prevent blood cells from conglomerating
- Are necessary for absorption of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K)
- Maintain proper kidney function and fluid balance
A high fiber diet protects against heart disease and has the remarkable function of supporting a healthy digestive and cardiovascular system.
Soluble fiber (pectins and gums) binds cholesterol and some other by-products in the bowel as it passes through the body. In this way, cholesterol absorption into the bloodstream is reduced (helps to lower serum cholesterol). Soluble fiber also slows digestion, which helps control blood glucose and contributes to weight management.
Insoluble fiber (cellulose, hemi-cellulose) primarily functions to increase moisture, which aids regularity, and supports a healthy digestive system and bowel regularity.
Flax lignans are natural phytoestrogens, and they have antibacterial and antifungal properties. They support cellular health and the overall immune system by regular cell production. Lignans are active antioxidants.
Parts used: High-stability Canadian brown, Premium Whole Flaxseeds.
Benefits: Promotes sustained energy levels, and healthy digestive, cardiovascular and nervous systems. Prevents dry and itchy skin. Promotes shiny coats (hair) and feathers.
Garlic (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Garlic was one of the National Cancer Institute's first five foods studied for multiple health benefits. Garlic contains 35 phytonutrients including the allelic sulfides, terpenes, and phenolic acids. One of the most important compounds in garlic is the odorless amino acid alliin. When garlic is crushed or cut, an enzyme called allinase is activated and converts alliin into allicin. The allicin itself then breaks down into different compounds. Allicin is most responsible for garlic's strong odor.
Parts used: Garlic cloves.
Benefits: It is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. This is why garlic is known as nature's antibiotic and enhancer of the immune system. It has a protective effect on the gastrointestinal tract (fights parasites and cancer). Helps reduction of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) while increasing high density lipoproteins (HDL). When fed in small doses to pets, it repels fleas and ticks.
Hesperidin (Avian only)
General: Commonly known as "citrus pulp", hesperidin includes the inner linings of the rind, the inner membranes, and raw pulp of citrus fruits. From a health-benefit standpoint, these parts (which are not usually eaten) are the best parts. Citrus is one of nature's largest storehouses of phytonutrients. Fifty-eight phytonutrients have been identified to date, including pectin, carotenoids, coumarins, glucarates, flavonoids, liminoids, lycopenes, terpenes and phenolic acids.
Parts used: Citrus pulp. Contains 98% of the bioflavonoid class of phytochemicals.
Benefits: Keeps the immune system strong, enhances the efficiency of vitamin A and E, has an anti-inflammatory effect, and helps prevent allergies. Is rich in antioxidants that eliminate free radicals, helping to prevent, skin, liver, lung and stomach cancers, and heart disease. Promotes fertility.
Kelp (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Kelp (seaweed) has a high content of natural plant iodine, which is absorbed into the body slowly and therefore more safely, than chemical iodine. Kelp has a salty taste and is used by many people as a salt replacement. Kelp also contains folic acid, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc and all trace minerals. It is a good source of fiber and phytonutrients such as chlorophyll and pheophytin (a chlorophyll-related substance).
Parts used: Stems and leaves of Pacific kelp (Macrocystis phyrifera).
Benefits: Kelp has been used for proper functioning of the thyroid, which is essential for good growth, energy, and metabolism. Helps prevent the growth of tumors and cancer causing mutations (it helps in the building of the cell wall). Acts as a natural antibiotic, and is used to help with arthritis, to treat skin diseases, stomach ulcers, and urinary problems. It also strengthens the immune system.
Lecithin (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Lecithin is a phospolipid which has been shown to be an essential nutrient for many animal species and, more recently, for humans. It is often used in baby foods. It has been used for many years as an emulsifier in foods. It is also known in medical circles as an "edible detergent" which breaks up fats into small droplets. It is of primary importance in keeping cholesterol soluble. Pure lecithin is known as phosphatidyl choline, a structural component of cell membranes. However, the term lecithin usually refers to a larger group of substances that include choline, inositol and fatty acids. The body requires choline for synthesis of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that slows down the deterioration of myelin, the protective sheath that covers nerve cells.
Source: Soybeans.
Benefits: Lecithin is essential for normal brain and nerve function. Some patients with Alzheimer's disease have shown improvement in learning, memory and orientation. It also plays an important role in cardiovascular health by helping reduce cholesterol levels.
Nutritional Yeast (Primary Dried Yeast)
(Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Nutritional yeast is traditionally known as a "super" food. Both nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast have great nutritional value. However, while brewer's yeast is enriched with carbohydrates, nutritional yeast is rich in high-quality protein (16 different amino acids). It contains a broad spectrum of B complex vitamins, folic acid, choline, and various minerals such as selenium, chromium, iron, potassium, calcium, chromium and zinc.
Parts used: Sacharomyces cerevisiae from natural fermentation. The primary dried yeast used in our product formulas is nutritional yeast, specially formulated for those on a vegetarian diet.
Benefits: Nutritional yeast is known as a natural probiotic. Yeast is an excellent energy booster that helps to build the immune system and fights infections. It is beneficial for eczema, heart disorders, gout, nervousness, and fatigue. This results in healthy skin and hair. Note: Nutritional yeast helps to fight fungus infections. Yeast infections are caused by the fungus species Candida albicans, or other Candidas. Fungi are a completely different group of species than yeast cultures.
Parsley (Avian only)
General: Parsley is a very nutritious "green food". It has a lot of high chlorophyll. It is rich in vitamins A, B, and C (three times more vitamin C than citrus), and in several minerals such as iron (more than in any other green vegetable), copper, potassium, calcium and manganese. It contains 22 phytochemicals: flavonoids, cumarins, monoterpens, polyacetylenes, and limonene among others.
Parts used: Stems and leaves.
Benefits: Parsley is a powerful storehouse of antioxidants that help protect against cancer. It has been used to purify blood, and stimulate the digestive system. It is one of the most often used remedies for kidney and bladder problems. Parsley leaves are a useful antidote for garlic breath.
Pinto Beans (Avian only)
General: Pinto beans are legumes. They are a good source of soluble and insoluble fiber, and are 25% protein. They are rich in iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, zinc, phosphorous, calcium and potassium. They are a solid source of vitamin B1, vitamin B6, folic acid, niacin, and vitamin C. Pinto beans are a good source of carbohydrates for quick energy. They are low in fat and sodium.
Part used: Whole beans that are first cooked then freeze-dried.
Benefits: Lignans and fiber play an important role in protecting against osteoporosis and reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. They have antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-carcinogenic properties. They are vital for maintenance of nerves, intestine, mouth, and skin.
Rice Bran (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Rice Bran is the "brown" component of rice. It is the part that contains vitamins, minerals, and good fiber and is usually processed out of the rice. Rice bran also delivers a powerful package of naturally occurring antioxidants (including members of the vitamin E family). Eight phenols were identified in rice bran extract, including protocatechuic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, sinapic acid, tricin, and the substance gamma-oryzanol.
Parts used: Bran.
Benefits: Being rich in fiber and antioxidants, rice bran helps elimination of free radicals, and therefore shows anti-carcinogenic properties. It promotes colon and cardiovascular health.
Soy Protein (Avian only)
General: Proteins are the major building blocks of our whole body. The only thing the body has more of than protein is water. Soy beans are a valuable source of vegetarian protein. Soy protein has a positive effect on all aspects of health. Soy protein is of a quality equal to protein from eggs and milk (both of which contain cholesterol). Soy proteins are also a good source of B vitamins, and are rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, and zinc.
Parts used: Soy protein isolated by water extraction.
Benefits: Helps build muscles, skin, hair, nails, and bones. Soy protein is easy on the kidneys. It is important for bone, digestive, and cardiovascular health.
Spirulina (Avian only)
General: Spirulina is one of the earth's oldest living plants. It is blue-green alga that is extremely nutrient rich, especially in chlorophyll and beta-carotene. Spirulina is a good source of minerals including magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, iron, copper and zinc. Spirulina also contains many vitamins such as vitamin E, and is an excellent source of B vitamins including vitamin B12. Spirulina contains 26 times the calcium of milk. Spirulina is also the best whole food source of protein. It contains 18 amino acids.
Parts used: Spirulina is a single cell in a spiral plant form. The Spirulina that we use in our products is up to 60% protein.
Benefits: Spirulina maintains good vision and muscle structure. In birds, it promotes beak, feather, and coat health. The gamma linolenic acid in Spirulina helps to relieve arthritis and eczema. Promotes a healthy digestive, heart, nervous, and immune system.
Sunflower Seeds (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: These seeds are an important source of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. They are also fiber-rich. Sunflower seeds are included in our formula to bring the essential fatty acid ratio to a more optimum level by providing the omega 6 essential fatty acid.
Parts used: High quality and human-edible whole sunflower kernels.
Benefits: Enhances sustained energy levels, and healthy digestive, cardiovascular and nervous systems. Prevents dry and itchy skin. Promotes shiny coats (hair) and feathers.
Yucca Schidigera Extract (Avian, Canine, Canine Plus, Canine/Feline Vegetarian, Equine Plus and Feline)
General: Yucca is rich in the phytonutrient family phytosterols (steroid saponins).
Parts used: Natural pure extract of yucca root.
Benefits: Yucca has been used to relieve pain and inflammation of rheumatism and arthritis. It is known for its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Yucca's phytosterols block cholesterol absorption from foods, and it maintains a healthy digestive and nervous system.
